KAY LESTER

JULY 6, 1932 — JAN. 7, 2013

OSKALOOSA —  (Shirley) Kay Lester, 80, of Oskaloosa, died Monday, Jan. 7, 2013, at the Mahaska Health Partnership Hospital in Oskaloosa. 

She was born July 6, 1932, at Oskaloosa, the daughter of Wynne Dalton and Maxine Alberta Barnhill Everman. Kay graduated from the Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1950. On Aug. 3, 1952, she was united in marriage to L. Everitt Lester in Oskaloosa. Everitt died Thursday, May 12, 2011. Early on, Kay worked at Earl May, Charlie Russell Insurance, in the auto department in the Mahaska County Courthouse and then the A&W in Oskaloosa. She and Everitt later lived above the old Powers Funeral Home in Oskaloosa where Kay helped with record keeping, visitations and funeral services. In 1998, Kay and Everitt moved to the Nelson Pioneer farm where they were the resident caretakers. In 2005, they moved into Oskaloosa; however, Kay continued to give tours at the farm through the 2012 season. Kay was a member of the First Christian Church in Oskaloosa where she was active in the vocal and bell choir. She served as past president of the Christian Women’s Fellowship, Group 7. Kay served as the First President of the Theata Row Girls (Jr. Rebecka’s). She was also the Past Noble Grand of the Rebecka Lodge No. 16; and Past Most Excellent Chief of the Pythian Sisters No. 2. Kay was also a very active member of the Keomah Genealogical Society and the Mahaska County Historical Society. She enjoyed arranging flowers, doing genealogy work and singing, especially in the choir.

Her family includes her son and his wife, David and Pam Lester, of Moses Lake, Wash.; four grandchildren, William, April, Kota and Jon.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Jerry Everman.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Jan. 11, at 1:30 p.m. in the First Christian Church in Oskaloosa with the Rev. Michael Omundson officiating. Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Visitation will begin Thursday morning after 11 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the funeral chapel from 5-7 Thursday evening to greet friends and relatives. Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church in Oskaloosa.
