OSKALOOSA — HEDRICK — Martha Burtlow, 79, of Hedrick, died Friday, May 24, 2013, at the Mahaska Health Partnership Serenity House in Oskaloosa.
She was born Tuesday, Sept. 12, 1933, in Hammond, Ind., the daughter of Daniel and Margaret Sharp Stahl. She attended school in Hammond, Indiana and Chicago, Ill. On Sept. 29, 1951, she was united in marriage to Melvin Burtlow Sr. in Wapello, and Melvin passed away Feb. 11, 1996. Martha was a homemaker for most of her life but later worked various jobs including Pioneer Seed, the Townhouse Restaurant in Sigourney, and was also employed by the city of Hedrick. Martha enjoyed playing cards, especially solitaire, science fiction movies, and loved spending time with her family and friends.
She is survived by her nine children: four sons: Melvin Jr (and Eva) Burtow, of Ollie, Martin Burtlow, Marshell Burtlow, and Mark Burtlow, all of Hedrick; five daughters: Marjorie Lisk, of Hedrick, Margaret (and Don) Kempf, of Hedrick, Marcella Davis, of Richland, Marsha (and John) Dickerson, of New Sharon, and Melinda (and Bill) Coleman, of Hedrick; 21 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren.
Martha was preceded in death by her husband; one son, Marvin Mitchell Burtlow; four grandsons; two brothers; and two sisters.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 29, at 10:30 a.m. in the Fremont Funeral Chapel with Pastor John DeBeof officiating. Burial will be in the Doggett Cemetery near Lancaster. Visitation will begin Tuesday after 2 p.m. in the Fremont Funeral Chapel and the family will be present at the funeral chapel Tuesday from 5 – 7 p.m. to greet friends and relatives. Memorials may be made in her name to the Martha Burtlow memorial fund in care of the Fremont Funeral Chapel, Walnut and Maint Street, Post Office Box 276, Fremont, Iowa 52561.
