OSKALOOSA — Gladys Marie Allsup, 85, of Oskaloosa, died Monday, March 24, 2014, at the Hospice Serenity House in Oskaloosa.
She was born Feb. 7, 1929, in Oskaloosa, the daughter of Charles and Nellie Shroyer Moore. Gladys graduated from the Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1947, and then attended Louisiana State University. While in high school and college, Gladys worked at J.C. Penney’s in Oskaloosa and Baton Rouge. On Oct. 2, 1949, Gladys was united in marriage to Burl C. Allsup in Oskaloosa and he died on May 10, 2006. She later worked at Mahaska State Bank in Oskaloosa as a bank teller for 31 years. She also served as the secretary for the Bloomfield Cemetery Association for 20 years. Gladys was also a member of the Pythian Sisters for several years and attended Calvary Bible Church. Gladys enjoyed swimming and took advanced swimming classes while attending L.S.U. She also enjoyed horseback riding, dancing, and feeding and watching the blue birds.
Gladys’ family includes her two sons: Walter Dale Allsup and Jeffery Wayne Allsup, both of Oskaloosa; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Besides her husband, Gladys was preceded in death by her parents; and her mother-in-law, Lacey Allsup, who she dearly loved.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 29, at 11:30 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Doug Smiley officiating. As was her wish, her body will be cremated following the service and private burial of the cremated remains will be held at a later date in Cedar Township Cemetery north of Fremont. Visitation will begin Friday, March 28, after 12 p.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be present at the funeral chapel from 5 – 7 p.m. to greet friends and relatives. Memorials may be made to either the Hospice Serenity House, Stephen Memorial Animal Shelter, or Calvary Bible Church Prayer & Share.
