---- — LITTLETON, Colo. — Martha L. Durham, 84, of Littleton, Colo., died on Feb. 22, 2014, at the Lutheran Medical Center.
She was born May 3, 1929, in Oskaloosa, the daughter of Arie and Georgia (Rinehart) Vander Linden. She graduated from Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1947. She was united in marriage to Walter “Melvin” Durham on May 25, 1947, at the First Christian Church in Oskaloosa, and celebrated 57 years together. They were blessed with four children. They made homes in Iowa, Washington, Ohio and Nebraska, before retiring to Mohave Valley, Ariz., in 1991.
While living in Auburn, Neb., she was a bookkeeper for Darling Transfer, George’s Body Shop, Dennis & Carol Wheeler, and the Auburn Newspaper. She was a member of the Auburn Christian Church and later transferred her membership to the Southside Church of Christ. She also belonged to the American Legion Auxiliary. Upon retirement she was a member of Bullhead City Church of Christ in Bullhead City, Ariz. She enjoyed reading, sewing, and playing games with her family and friends.
Martha is survived by her children and their spouses: Michael and Kay Durham, of Shawnee, Kan., Charles and Nancy Durham, of DeBary, Fla., and Delane and Bam Tollinchi, of Littleton, Colo. Other survivors include her brothers and sisters: Donald and Joyce Vander Linden, of Prescott, Ariz., Kenneth and Marcia Vander Linden, of Bloomington, Ind., William and Ann Vander Linden, of Fairview, Tenn., Ethel Mattox, of El Cajon, Calif., Dorothy and Roy Moore, of Fremont, Alice Howard, of Lakewood, N.J., and sisters-in-law: Kathyleen Dusenberry, of Oskaloosa, and Eileen Pincomb, of Colorado Springs, Colo., seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and son, John who gave his life in the Vietnam War. Other relatives preceding her in death include brothers: Garrett, Charles, and Eugene Vander Linden and sister: Mary Hols, brothers-in-law: Keith Mattox, Bruce Howard, and Marion, Herman, Forrest, Marvin, & Lowell Durham, and sisters-in-law: Virginia Vander Linden, Alma Binns, Cora Ellis, Harriet Graham, and Stella Durham.
Visitation with the family will be Friday March 28, from 6 - 7:30 p.m. at Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa. Memorial services will be Saturday, March 29, at 10 a.m. at Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Pastor Alvern Boetsma officiating. Burial will be at Forest Cemetery following the service. Memorials may be given to the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation in honor of Martha and Melvin Durham.
