---- — PELLA — Marie Beekhuizen, 90, of Pella, died Monday, March 17, 2014, at Hearthstone/Jefferson Place in Pella.
She was born Feb. 7, 1924, at Tracy, the daughter of Willem Dirk and Marie Vande Scheur Hol. She graduated from Pella High School with the class of 1941. Following graduation she earned her teaching certificate and taught in country schools in Marion County. On Jan. 17, 1947, she was united in marriage to Bert Beekhuizen at her parents’ home in Pella; Bert died Aug. 17, 2005. Following their marriage Marie stayed home to care for her family and home. Being a teacher at heart, Marie went back to college and earned her teaching degree from William Penn College in 1971. She taught elementary school in various communities including: Cedar, Eddyville, Oskaloosa Christian Grade School, and Sully Christian Grade School. She retired from Prairie City Christian School in 1987. In retirement she offered private tutoring for many students. She had a passion for teaching her entire life and found great satisfaction in teaching children to read. She was an active member of the Bethel Christian Reformed Church in Oskaloosa, and when they moved to Pella she transferred her membership to Calvary Christian Reformed Church where she was very active in the ladies organizations. She enjoyed reading, quilting, music, and the After 5 Club. She and Bert enjoyed traveling and gardening together. Her grandchildren held a special place in her heart and she always looked forward to them visiting. She delighted in having them come for an extended stay in the summer and always had plenty of treats on hand. Hospitality was very important to her, the coffeepot was always on and she always made time to visit with family and friends.
Her family includes her four children, Beverly (Darrel) Van Veldhuizen, of Eddyville, Marilyn (Jim) Dean, of Sioux Center, Jim Beekhuizen, of Paducah, Ky., and Marla (Bryce) Dahm, of Pella; her grandchildren, Melissa (Charles) Eaton, LeAnne (Norman) Walker, J.T. (Bronwen) Dean, Ross (Genevieve) Dean, Matthew (Katie) Dean, and Jansen (Brittany) Dahm; 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Nellie Wyngarden, of Oskaloosa, and Minnie Van Wyngarden, of Pella; a sister-in-law, Marie (Harold) Van Maanen, of Pella; a brother-in-law, Eldert Groenendyk, of Urbandale; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to her husband, Marie was preceded in death by her parents; a grandson, Brady Dahm; four brothers, Marion Hol, Everett Hol and two in infancy; and a sister, Janet Vander Beek.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 22, at 10:30 a.m. in the Calvary Christian Reformed Church in Pella with the Rev. Sheldon Starkenburg officiating. There will be a family prayer service at 10:15 a.m. Saturday morning. Visitation will begin Friday after 10 a.m. in the Garden Chapel Funeral Home and the family will be at the funeral home from 5-7 p.m. Friday evening to greet friends and relatives. Burial will be in the Bethel Cemetery near Tracy, Iowa. Memorials may be made to the Hearthstone/Jefferson Place Activity Fund. The Pella Garden Chapel Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
