---- — OSKALOOSA — Gerrit Van Zomeren, 94, of Oskaloosa and formerly of Eddyville, died Tuesday, March 19, 2014, at the Sigourney Care Center in Sigourney.

He was born June 7, 1919, at Pella, the son of Teunis and Anna Roorda Van Zomeren. On March 4, 1947, he was united in marriage to E. Elizabeth Hiemstra in Oskaloosa; Elizabeth died on May 15, 1999. Early on Gerrit farmed several areas in and around Mahaska County, he then farmed for over 30 years near Chillicothe. Gerrit also worked at McCurdy Seed in Fremont and did some maintenance work around the Penn Central Mall in Oskaloosa. Gerrit’s heart was on the farm his entire life. He was a member of the Farm Bureau.

His family includes his three daughters, Susan (David) Claypool, of Parnell, Linda Van Zomeren, of Ottumwa, and Sandra (William) Cain, of Bloomfield; six grandchildren, Ashley (Brandon) Scott, Melissa Decker, William Cain, Elizabeth Cain, Kate Claypool, and Shanea King; 6 great- grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, Gerrit was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Joan Van Zomeren; three brothers, Carl Van Zomeren, Walter Van Zomeren and Clarence Van Zomeren; and two sisters, Leona Van Zomeren and Ada Van Zomeren in infancy.

Funeral services will be held Friday, March 21, at 2 p.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with the Rev. Lois Williams officiating. Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Visitation will begin Thursday morning after 11 in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the funeral chapel from 5-7 Thursday evening to greet friends and relatives. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
