FEB. 16, 1930 — NOV. 3, 2013

Charles Augustine, 83, of Oskaloosa, passed away Sunday evening, Nov. 3, 2013, at his home in Oskaloosa.

Charles Harold Augustine, son of Harold and Mary (Vail) Augustine, was born Feb. 16, 1930, at the rural home of his parents near Rose Hill.  Charles was a 1947 graduate of Lacey High School and then began farming with his father.  Charles was actively involved in farming until 1974, at which time he began selling real estate and co-owned the United Realty Company.  Charles served as a Mahaska County Supervisor from 1978 to 1984.  Following his terms as supervisor, Charles resumed his real estate career; and eventually sold his company to Hawkeye Real Estate.  He will be remembered by many as always having a pen in his pocket and ready to make a deal.  Throughout his life time, Charles served on or was a member of the Barnes City Co-op Board, the Farm Bureau, the YMCA Board, the Federal Land Bank Board and the Realty Board.  He was a member of the Central Reformed Church since 1978.

Charles married Frances Vander Waal in 1949 and to this union four children were born.  He later married Betty (Lamers) Fynaardt, June 30, 1978.  They made their home east of Oskaloosa. Charles loved the farm and always enjoyed helping his family in their farming operations.  Early in life Charles enjoyed Minnesota fishing trips; later he enjoyed wood working, especially building purple martin bird houses.  He also enjoyed playing cards and solving Sudoku puzzles.

Charles family includes his wife, Betty, of Oskaloosa; his children: Bill (Sue) Augustine, of Chicago;  Linda (Jim) Lee, of Oskaloosa; Carol (Bob) Herr, of Fremont; Diane (Dennis) Green, of Oskaloosa; 14 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren; and from his union with Betty, his extended family: Gene (Shari) Fynaardt, of Oskaloosa; Crystal Fynaardt, of Oskaloosa; Jerome (Linda) Fynaardt, of Rose Hill; and Scot (Diane) Fynaardt, of Pella; 13 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; a sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Marvin Molyneux, of Oskaloosa; a sister-in-law, Darlene (Harold) Slagter, of Oskaloosa; and a brother-in-law, Gerald (Sue) Lamers, of Earlham.
