Verda E. Kirby, 88, of Oskaloosa, died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013, at the Mahaska Health Partnership in Oskaloosa.
She was born July 1, 1924, at Bussey, the daughter of Lloyd and Laura Humphrey Masterson. She graduated from the Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1942. Early on she worked at General Mills and later at Maytag in Newton. On June 9, 1945, she was united in marriage to Ovid O. Kirby at the Little Brown Church in Nashua; Ovid died Jan. 24, 1991. Following their marriage, she worked at Playtime Supper Club and sold Avon for many years. Verda spent the majority of her time caring for her home and eight children. She was a devoted wife and mother and was very involved in her children’s lives, serving as room mother, Den Mother for Cub Scouts and helping with the PTA. She and Ovid were foster parents for many children through the years. Verda loved children and was passionate about providing a loving nurturing home. She enjoyed teaching and painting ceramics, she even ran a ceramic shop in her basement for a time. She also enjoyed, playing cards and making trips to Prairie Meadows and Las Vegas, cake decorating, gardening and canning. She always looked forward to shopping trips to Kohl’s with her girls.
Her family includes her eight children, Stanley (and Carolyn) Kirby, of Oskaloosa, Sue (and Gary) Gerard, of Oskaloosa, Denny Kirby, of Oskaloosa, Randy Kirby (and Claudia Briggs), of Oskaloosa, Roxanne (and Dave) Bahnsen, of Coralville, Tammy Sparks, of Oskaloosa, Jody (and Randy) Hunt, of Oskaloosa, and Lisa Evans, of Oskaloosa; a foster son, Joel (and Cheri) Sims, of Lovilia; 14 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; a sister, Helen Smith, of Oskaloosa; two half brothers, Jack Masterson, of Las Cruces, N.M., and Vernon Masterson, of Greely, Colo.; and two half sisters, Linda Masterson-Blanchard, of Antigua, Wis., and Janice Masterson-Kauffman, of Eagle Grove.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Dale and Robert Masterson.
Funeral services will be held Monday, Jan. 28, at 1:30 p.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Charlie McMillian officiating. Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Visitation will begin Sunday morning after 11 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the funeral chapel from 2-4 Sunday to greet friends and relatives. Memorials may be made to the Verda Kirby Memorial Fund and per Verda’s wishes will be used to help her granddaughters that are hearing impaired.
