Billy E. “Bill” Stephen, 65, of Oskaloosa, died Thursday, Aug. 8, 2013, at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City.

Billy Eugene Stephen was born July 17, 1948, in New Sharon, son of Robert and Helen (Polka) Stephen. He graduated from Oskaloosa High School and shortly after joined the U.S. Army and served in Germany during the Vietnam War, being discharged in 1970 as a sergeant. A few years later, on June 1, 1974, he married Debra Shepherd.
Bill was an avid fisherman, a member of the South Central Iowa Bass Club, and loved his time outdoors. He enjoyed watching sports, especially the Chicago Cubs. He worked for 20 years at Vermeer Manufacturing; serving in many capacities from welder to foreman. In his later years, he owned his own welding shop for several years.
His family includes his wife of 39 years, Debra; children, James Stephen, of Minneapolis, Minn., and Christy Zeeff (Brian), of Gardner, Kan.; mother-in-law, Joy Shepherd, of Sigourney; sister, Sheryl McCain (Ron), of Oskaloosa; sisters-in-law, Diane Glandon (Randy), of Sigourney, and Jan Stephen; brothers-in-law, Jim Shepherd (Vickie) and Robert Rodwell, as well as their extended families.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Peggy Rodwell and brother, Kenny Stephen.
