BEACON —

Eugene “Gene” Daniels, 86, of Beacon, passed away Saturday morning, Aug. 31, 2013, at Mahaska Health Partnership.

Eugene Rosebrook Daniels was born Aug. 20, 1927, the son of Paul Melvin and Marie Rosebrook Daniels, in Oskaloosa.

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy (Seabee branch) at the age of 17, furthering his education.  He served in Guam during this time.  He then re-enlisted in the U.S. Army retiring in May 1967 after serving 20 years of service.  He was stationed in Korea, and did two tours each in Japan and Germany.  His specialty was Corp of Engineers.

He married Darlene Andeway, daughter of Martin F. and Helen Irene Havens Andeway, in Oskaloosa, March 9, 1948.  To this union six children were born: Kathleen, Linda, Robert, William, Marcia and Cheryl Sue.  They later divorced. Dec. 20, 1975, in Oskaloosa, he married Mabel Bunnell Ankeney, daughter of Alfert L. and Violet Moore Bunnell.  Eugene and Mabel resided in Beacon during their 38 years of marriage.  He was a Life Member of the Keo-Mah Genealogical Society.  He loved talking about his military days to anyone who would listen and he loved going to the casinos in his later years. He also enjoyed gardening and carpentry, remodeling his home over the years.

He is survived by his wife Mabel, of Beacon; his six children; two step-children: Carolyn (David) Cupples, of Newton, David (Lou) Ankeney, of Colorado Springs; a special step-grandson, Charles (Joe) Cupples, of Des Moines; a special neice and nephew: Connie Small and Donnie Blizzard, of Oskaloosa, and many grandchildren; great-grandchildren; step- grandchildren; and step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters; two brothers; and one step-son, Dan Ankeney.

As was his wish, Gene’s body has been cremated. A private graveside memorial service will be held at Beacon Cemetery, where his ashes will be inurned. Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel is handling the arrangements. Memorials may be made to the Keo-Mah Genealogical Society. Memories and condolences may be sent by visiting the online obituary guest book at www.gvlfuneralchapel.com.
