ELLEN PEARL LONG-NEWELL

APRIL 15, 1923 — AUG. 9, 2013

Ellen “Pearl” Long-Newell, longtime resident of Fostoria, passed away Aug. 9, 2013, in Minneapolis, Minn.

Ellen was born near Lehigh on April 15, 1923, to Luther and Sabrina Ophelia (Curtis) Linn. She attended the Lehigh Public schools and graduated salutatorian of her class. On Aug. 29, 1943, Ellen married Alva Long in Corpus Christi, Texas, where Al was stationed at the Naval Air Station.

While Al was stationed in Corpus Christi, Ellen was employed by the Civil Service. Upon completion of Al’s military service, they returned to Lehigh and then moved to the Spencer area where they farmed for several years. When Al became the manager of the Fostoria Farmer’s Elevator, they moved to Fostoria and Ellen made her home in Fostoria until 1990.

Ellen worked in various clerical positions throughout her life, but her priority was her family, church and serving God. She was a member of the Fostoria United Methodist Church where she served as treasurer for 31 years, taught Sunday School & Bible School, camp counselor at church camp, served as Secretary of the United Methodist Women and Cub Scout den mother. Al passed away in 1980.

In 1990, Ellen married Charles Newell, of Eddyville, and she moved to Oskaloosa. She became an active member of the Eddyville United Methodist Church where she served on several boards and was a member of the United Methodist Women. Charles passed away in 2001.

Ellen enjoyed her family, flower gardening, writing, singing and remembering her family and friends with greeting cards and a special note. Her family and friends enjoyed her bread baking and excellent cooking.

Ellen is survived by her children: Rick (Sara) Long, Linda (Tom) Jons, Charlene (Tom) Doyle, Kathleen (Jerry) Rempe and Nick (Sue) Newell; 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Two brothers: Charles “Bill” and Gerald (Phyllis); one sister: Elizabeth ”Bette” Wickwire; many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers: Wayne and Dean; sister: Elsie; her husbands: Al and Charles.

A memorial service will be held at Fostoria United Methodist Church on Oct. 5, at 11 a.m. Memorials may be given to the Fostoria United Methodist Church.
