DES MOINES — Shirley Jean Kentfield passed away Friday, Dec. 13, 2013, at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines after a brief illness.
She was born Nov. 26, 1935, in Oskaloosa, to Earl and Laura Kentfield. Shirley attended Olivet Nazarene College in Kankakee, Ill., and William Penn University in Oskaloosa. After graduating from William Penn with a degree in sociology, Shirley held the position of social worker in the Social Service Department for the State of Iowa in Des Moines until she retired in 1997.
Shirley is survived by two sisters, Laura Leslie of Pontiac, Ill., and Phyllis Buchanan, of Oklahoma City, Okla., as well as many nieces and nephews and grand-nieces and -nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Earl and Laura Kentfield, a sister Maxine Nash, and a brother Wilmar (Bill) Kentfield.
Shirley was much needed and appreciated as a caregiver for family members on numerous occasions. Her generous and caring nature was also evident as she cared for her many pets through the years.
Memorials in her honor may be made to the Animal Rescue League of Iowa, 5452 NE 22nd Street, Des Moines 50313-2528.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
