---- — EDDYVILLE — Richard E. Sammons, 45, of 1325 720th Ave., died March 2, 2014, at his home after a courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by family and friends.
He was born July 23, 1968, in Ottumwa to Orville E. “Gene” and Mary Louise Mills Sammons. He married Julie A. Woodruff on July 23, 1988.
A graduate of Eddyville High School in 1987, he farmed and had worked for the Iowa DOT Highway Division.
He served as a Southern Iowa Fair Board Member and was a member of the Poppin’ Johnnies Club. He enjoyed camping, racing, golfing, welding and working on farm machinery.
Surviving is his wife, Julie; a daughter, Tayler Sammons (fiancé, Jordan Vander Molen), of Pella; his mother, Mary Louise Johnson, of Ottumwa; mother and father-in-law, Ginny and Woody Woodruff, of Ottumwa; two brothers, Jim (Michelle) Sammons, of Kansas, and Tenny (Carla) Sammons, of Kahoka, Mo.; three sisters, Deb Albers, of Fort Dodge, Donna Leedall, of Ottumwa, and Terresa Sholes, of Ottumwa; and a sister-in-law, Brenda (Brent) Gooden, of Ottumwa.
He was preceded in death by his father; a step-father, Sonny Johnson; his grandparents and an infant brother.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Reece Funeral Home in Ottumwa with the Rev. Mel Kendall officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Corners Cemetery.
Visitation will start at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with the family present from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.
Memorials may be made to the family for an agricultural scholarship to be made in Richard’s name at a later date.
