OSKALOOSA — Beulah May Silvers, the fourth child of Herman and Ina (Lundy) Silvers, was born May 15, 1927. She was surrounded by her loving husband, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren when she passed away April 9, 2015 after a long battle with cancer.
PELLA — Dr. Rebecca Westra, D.D.S., 64, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday at her residence in Des Moines. Dr. Westra was currently practicing dentistry in Des Moines. She is survived by her brother, Steven F. and Sherry Westra, of Pella, her sister, Jennifer C. and Kraig Van Kooten, of Harvey; a niece, Carrie Schwab, two nephews, Johnathan Van Kooten and Kendall Van Kooten; and a great-niece, Abbie Schwab.
OSKALOOSA — Marjorie Hines, 65, of Oskaloosa, passed away Wednesday, April 1, 2015, at the Crystal Heights Care Center in Oskaloosa. Funeral services are currently pending at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home in Montezuma.
NEW VIENNA, Ohio — John Dunaway, 94, of New Vienna, Ohio and formerly of the Sigourney, passed away Thursday, March 26, 2015, at the Dayton VA Hospice Unit. He was born Monday, August 16, 1920, in Ollie, son of Charles Miller and Alicia Marie McLansborough Dunaway. Following high school, John joined the United States Navy where he completed flight training and fought in WWII. John was united in marriage to Ellen Bastiansean Dunaway. Following marriage, John worked as a carpenter in Minneapolis, Minn. He moved back to the Fremont area in the 1960’s where he farmed and did carpentry work, especially for Parson’s College. He sold the farm and retired in the early 2000’s. He still checked on the farm daily when he was living in Iowa and when he moved to New Vienna, Ohio, he checked on things at his daughter’s farm. He loved Black Angus cattle, health and nutrition, reading western novels and his family. His favorite hobby was hard work. He was a member of the American Legion and early on was very active in the Methodist Church.
ALBIA — John J. Johnson, 73, of Albia, joined his heavenly family on March 27, 2015, after a courageous seven and a half year battle with leukemia and Hodgkin’s lymphoma. John was born Sept. 5, 1941, in Iowa City to Ernest D. and Isabelle Herman Johnson of Lovilla. John graduated from Lovilla High School where he met the beautiful love of his life, Judith Ann Sickler. John and Judi were joined in marriage on Aug. 5, 1962 at the Lovilia United Methodist Church, where John was a lifelong member. John’s dad was a hard working coal miner, but it only took one trip into the coal pit to convince John to seek another path in life. After graduation, John worked a short time for a natural gas pipeline and Culligan water service. He then began working in the insurance industry and created a flourishing agency where he worked for forty-two years. Johnson Insurance Sales Corp. continues to serve southeast Iowa even today. The success he gained in helping clients was attributed to his high integrity and always putting others first. John believed in volunteer service all of his life. He enjoyed serving Lovilia’s Fire Department and Community Betterment for many years. He helped support and construct Lovilia community building, served many offices in the Life Underwriters Association, and was involved in the Albia Victorian Stroll and the Albia Chamber of Commerce. John wanted to be part of improving the longevity of the Albia parks by being a member of the Albia Rotary Paul Harris Fellowship. John was devoted to his family and provided a life time of memories for all of us to enjoy.
OSKALOOSA — Lois Mae Stock Sperry, 76, of Oskaloosa, died Saturday, March 21, 2015, at home. She was born to the late Paul & Lucille Failyer, May 8, 1938, in Richland, Mo. She married the late Merrill Dean Stock in 1963, and they lived together in Deep River, until his death in 1978. She later married Harley Sperry in 1999 and helped raise her 4 grandchilden. Lois enjoyed being a homemaker and spending time with her grandchildren. She enjoyed writing, watching all sporting events and racing, and traveling in the U.S. and collecting key chains and magnets.
LEIGHTON — Funeral Services for Leroy Nugteren will be held Saturday, March 28, at 1:30 p.m. at Leighton Christian Reformed Church, Leighton. Visitation will begin after 1 p.m. Friday at the Calvary Christian Reformed Church in Pella where the family will be present Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. Memorials may be designated for either the Leighton Christian Reformed Church in Leighton or Friends of Mahaska County Conservation — Leroy Nugteren Memorial.
