52577 Scholarship an opportunity for OHS students

OSKALOOSA — It’s an opportunity for those with higher education in mind.

Jeff Smith, who graduated from OHS in 1977, spoke about the 52577 Scholarship at Tuesday’s Oskaloosa Rotary Club meeting at The Peppertree.

The 52577 Scholarship has its origins way back in 1977 with a group of Oskaloosa High School students, all of whom graduated on May 25, 1977. The scholarship’s name, of course, corresponds with their graduation date.

Smith said he wanted more people to be aware of the scholarship.

This year marks the seventh year applications for the 52577 Scholarship have been taken to OHS, said Smith. Since then, the scholarship has had a “good track record,” said Smith, noting that contributions to the scholarship to date are at $153,100.

Smith pointed out that 99 percent of donations to the scholarship have come from those with the OHS Class of 1977. He said 88 percent of these funds are from graduates that now live outside of Iowa.

“We’ve had some very successful classmates who we’ve encouraged to get involved,” said Smith, noting that this shows what Oskaloosa has meant to many donors.

Each year, $10,000 in 52577 Scholarship money usually gets split between three or four students, Smith said. The scholarship money goes with these students for four years, said Smith.

A student’s level of need is taken into account when applying for the 52577 Scholarship, Smith said. A handout on the scholarship provided at Tuesday’s Oskaloosa Rotary Club Meeting notes that “The ideal candidate(s) for this scholarship opportunity will exemplify the qualities of leadership, character, academic achievement, participation and financial need.”

Those operating the 52577 Scholarship work with OHS student services to help ensure their scholarship is given to the appropriate students, added Smith.

Oskaloosa Superintendent Russ Reiter said the 52577 Scholarship is an “incredible opportunity.”
