Burn off holiday calories at the YMCA

OSKALOOSA — Feeling weighted down by too much holiday party food? The YMCA has a new exercise class to help you melt off those excess pounds.

“I’ve got one new sports program — BODYPUMP — that starts Jan. 2,” said YMCA Sports and Aquatics Director Ryan Harkema.

The YMCA has four instructors currently trained in the Les Mills BODYPUMP program.

“It’s a group exercise/weight lifting class down in our studio,” Harkema said. “It’s low weight, but a lot of reps.”

The 60-minute BODYPUMP class combines weight room exercises and music to shape and tone muscles. The class includes warmups, lower body, upper body and abdominal exercises and a cool down, according to a BODYPUMP brochure.

“You can burn up to 560 calories per class,” Harkema said.

The BODYPUMP class will be held every day, Monday through Saturday at various times.

The class is free to YMCA members who have the Classic and Premium memberships, Harkema said.

“I’ve got a feeling that BODYPUMP is going to be a big thing,” Harkema said. Both the Ottumwa and Des Moines YMCA facilities have started BODYPUMP and staff members have reported that the class is popular.

If you want to try other exercises, there are other activities at the YMCA in 2013.

“We’re going to start a Pickleball league in April for singles and doubles,” Harkema said.

Pickleball is a sport similar to badminton and ping pong that is popular with seniors. It is now a sport in the Senior Olympics and the Iowa Games.

For youth, there are two new sports starting up in 2013 — indoor kickball and dodgeball.

“These will be brand new this year,” Harkema said.

Other YMCA youth sports include indoor soccer, indoor flag football, and aikido. Adult sports include dodgeball, basketball and family aikido.
