OSKALOOSA — Some local churches teamed up with New Hope Community Inc. Saturday to help local needy families.

Volunteers from Fellowship Bible Church, First Christian Reformed Church, Omega Church and Lifehouse Community Church gave their time, along with the New Hope staff, to offer a variety of services to the needy during the New Hope Depot event.

“We started at 11,” said Fellowship Bible Church Youth Pastor George Filber. “The line started form at 10:15. The line was almost to the corner.”

Filber said about 120 families were helped, which was about 400 people.

Filber said the churches did a similar event two years ago, but the crowd and the number of volunteers working were larger than the previous event. There were about 100 volunteers working Saturday, he added.

“I’m just tickled pink,” New Hope Community Executive Director Leslie Rice said.

The variety of services provided at the event included a family photo, a hot dog lunch, health care information, dental care, an eye screening, a free haircut, a free oil change, free groceries and free clothing, Filber said.

Representatives from Love INC, Crisis Intervention Services and New Hope Community also had booths at the event.

Filber said about 48 hand-made quilts were given away at the Klothes Kloset.

About six months of planning went into the Hope Depot, Filber said.

“Bringing people together — this is what we can do,” he said.

As an example, 48 families had their portraits taken Saturday. For some, it’s the first time they ever had a family photo, Filber said.

“It’s a cool thing to do for families,” he said.

The weather was perfect and there was a great turnout, Filber said in sum of the day.

“It’s a great thing to be part of,” he said. Doing volunteer work at New Hope Community is like doing “a mission trip at home, which is what the church is about.”
