Many venture to mammoth site

MAHASKA COUNTY — The mammoth dig site in Mahaska County attracts people from near and far.

Dave Brenzel, of the Indian Creek Nature Center, said they’re finally seeing the “light at the end of the tunnel” as far as things go concerning a large collection of bones discovered at one end of the excavation pit.

Work on the other end of the excavation pit also continued during Saturday’s dig.

“We’ll look in two different areas today here,” Brenzel said Saturday morning before venturing to the dig site.

As with previous mammoth dig site days, interested individuals from numerous locations participated in Saturday’s dig. Some came from as nearby as Ottumwa and Sigourney, while others traveled a bit further to get to the dig site.

Deb Waggett, of Vermont, is working on a project through the University of Iowa while on sabbatical from her work as a professor at Castleton, a Vermont State College. Waggett was on hand for Saturday’s mammoth dig site work.

Waggett, a 1999 University of Iowa graduate, was excited to be able to be involved with the mammoth dig site.

“I can’t believe I’m here,” she said.

Chris Hord, who works with the Kansas Historical Society, among other entities, was also at the mammoth dig site Saturday.

Hord has had experience with mammoths in the past. He said he’s helped at at mammoth excavation site in western Kansas for the past three summers.

Much like Waggett, Hord said he was looking forward to pitching in at the dig site in Mahaska County.
