Art on the Square to feature more than 40 artists

OSKALOOSA — It’s a time for creative minds to shine.

Sue Lynn, chairwoman of Art on the Square, said the event has been held for more than 40 years. This year there will be around 45 artists on the square, said Lynn. This will be accompanied by several children’s activities, as well.

Many of the artists that will be on the square between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Saturday are ones that have continued to show their works in Oskaloosa year after year, according to Lynn.

“We have new artists and old artists,” explained Lynn. “I mean — people that have been here a lot and new ones that have never been here.”

Those attending Art on the Square this weekend can expect to see both local and national artists and their work at Art on the Square. Lynn agreed that Art on the Square shows those coming in from the outside that Oskaloosa cares about art.

“We want everyone to realize that we may be a small town, but we have a lot of cultural things going on and that’s important, I think,” she said. “It’s just a nice way to showcase our beautiful square, too. You can’t have a much nicer setting for an art show than that.”

A raffle will be part of Art on the Square this year, as well. People can buy tickets up through noon Saturday, when the drawing will be held. Lynn said folks have the opportunity to win some artwork with the raffle.

That’s not all.

“We have all kinds of prizes going on,” said Lynn.

As in past years, Lynn said she’s hoping the rain will hold off on Saturday. She noted that Art on the Square has only had to be moved indoors a couple of times in the past 20 years or so. In the event of rain, Art on the Square will be moved to Penn Central Mall.
