SmallTown Super Heroes kick off Friday After Five

OSKALOOSA — Ever need to blow off a little steam after work on Fridays? If so, Friday After Five in downtown Oskaloosa is just the ticket.

Friday After Five kicked off Friday, May 31, next to the city square.

Friday After Five features a band that plays from 5 to 8 p.m. every Friday evening in June. Besides music, there are vendors for food and beverages as well as activities for kids in the city square park.

The band SmallTown Super Heroes rocked the stage Friday while Mr. Taco served food to spectators.

Oskaloosa Chamber Events Coordinator Karen Hafner said the YMCA has a crafts table for children during Friday After Five. Also, Tom Terrific  makes balloon animals for children.

“This year, we’re really changing it up — doing outdoorsy stuff,” YMCA Executive Director Dawn Collins said. “We’ll stay until the kids are done.”

Collins said YMCA intern Gabi Boxler is helping with the crafts booth. She was on hand to help children color paddles for paddle ball.

Tom Terrific also inflated balloon animals for children. He made a balloon animal for Isabelle Vehara, 4, of Oskaloosa Friday afternoon.

“I’ve been doing this for 17 years,” he said.

Friday After Five features the following bands and food vendors for the rest of June.

June 7: Gimmik with Hy-Vee providing food.

June 14: Fatal Addiction with the Mahaska County Cattlemen serving food.

June 21: Abby Normal with Hy-Vee supplying food.

June 28: Sons of Gladys Kravits with Breadeaux Pisa serving food.
