An alliance for rock n' roll

OSKALOOSA — Black Star Alliance bring to the table a rough-and-tumble brand of Rock n’ Roll with influences ranging from Iron Maiden to Green Day.

Two of the band’s members include bass player Devin Houser, of New Sharon, and drummer Patrick McPherren, of Oskaloosa.

When asked what they would call their music, Houser said the running joke is that they’re a mix between Heavy Metal, Blues and Punk Rock.

“Seriously — it’s just Rock n’ Roll the way we like it,” said Houser.

Houser said the number of people who come to Black Star Alliance gigs is not his focus, adding that people get the same high-energy show no matter what.

“We put everything we have into our show,” Houser said.

To date, the band’s largest gig was filling an opening slot on a recent tour stop from longtime rock radio staples, Buck Cherry.

“That was a really nice show,” McPherren said. “We had a lot of people that showed up for us.”

Black Star Alliance may be a young band, having officially formed this past October, but their ambition has a long view. Houser said he hopes the band will be able to tour outside of Iowa next year.

McPherren agreed, saying that when Black Star Alliance formed, it was for the long haul.

The band has delved into recording their music already, as well. A self-recorded five-song EP was created with plenty of DIY effort to back it up. Houser noted that creating the EP took about a month and a half.

Black Star Alliance will play a free show at Stix, 607 High Ave. W., beginning at 9 p.m. this Saturday alongside Section Hate and Chupacabra.
