Severe weather expected today

---- — OTTUMWA -- Southeast Iowa will likely see the return of severe weather Sunday.

Forecasters say there is a very high chance of thunderstorms this afternoon and evening and some could become severe. The area got a taste of severe weather last night, with some areas seeing hail and a severe thunderstorm warning declared for Marion County in the early morning hours Sunday.

The National Weather Service says this is the greatest chance of severe weather for Iowa since 2011. Every form of severe weather is possible with these storms, including tornadoes. Area residents are being advised to keep a close eye on conditions, especially as the afternoon heats up.

The threat continues Monday, which is a change to earlier forecasts that put the storms farther east and south by the start of the work week.
