More Little Free Libraries coming to Osky

OSKALOOSA — They may be small in size, but their purpose is huge.

At the Oct. 21 regular meeting of the Oskaloosa City Council, council members approved a resolution establishing a Little Free Library partnership with the Altrusa Club of Oskaloosa. This will allow for two little free libraries on a city-owned lot at the corner of South H Street and Sixth Avenue West.

Bernice Hahn, a member of the Altrusa Club of Oskaloosa, described a typical Little Free Library as being as big as a good sized birdhouse on a post.

“We will stock them with a variety of reading materials to start out and then they have a plaque on them that says, ‘take a book, share a book,’” explained Hahn.

Little free libraries aren’t unique to Oskaloosa. Hahn said there is something of a Little Free Library movement going on. To learn more, visit www.littlefreelibrary.org.

The Little Free Library concept really ties in well with the purposes behind the Altrusa Club of Oskaloosa, noted Hahn. According to www.altrusa.com, “We make our communities better through leadership, partnership and service.”

“And, of course, the goal of Little Free Libraries is to enhance communities,” said Hahn, noting that literacy is important to Altrusa clubs internationally. “We think we can accomplish a number of things. We can promote literacy and community with the Little Free Libraries.”

The pair of Little Free Libraries planned to be added to Oskaloosa have yet to be designed.

Lisa McNulty, president of the Altrusa Club of Oskaloosa said they would like one little library to be geared toward adults, with the other aimed at children.

Hahn noted that there is considerable foot traffic in the area where they’ll be placing the Little Free Libraries. There may also be a donated bench at the site, as well as some greenery, added McNulty.
