Richardson 18th at Drake Relays

DES MOINES — Oskaloosa sophomore Taylor Richardson made her 2013 debut at the Blue Oval at the Drake Relays Thursday afternoon as the lone Indian participant for the girls this year.

Richardson went into the meet as the 16th best jumper in the state this season, but she sophomore nerves did not allow her to do as well as she could have done.

“It is really nice to go there as a sophomore, but I was really nervous,” said Richardson after the meet via telephone.

“I go through 16-2. I came out and did the best I could do, but think I could have done better,” she said.

Richardson, who was at Drake in the 4x100 last year, said this meet is preparing her for a run to state next month.

“I told coach that this helped me,” said Richardson. “I saw some of the girls who I have jumped with and some of the ones I know are good. It really gets me ready for district and the state meet.”

Richardson had a busy Thursday. She left Drake and headed to Pella where she joined her teammates to run the 800 relay, 400 relay and the 400 meter hurdles.

One of Richardson’s competitors, Jessica Holterhaus, finished 10th with a leap of 16-9.75, but did not make the finals.
