William Penn recipient of $12 million

The Musco Sports Lighting gift the largest in the school's 134 year history.

OSKALOOSA — William Penn University President Dr. Richard Sours announced Thursday afternoon that Musco Sports Lighting Company has donated a gift of $12 million to the school.

Sours made the announcement before approximately 100 people during a press conference held on the main floor in the new William Penn University Recreation Center.

“This phenomenal gift from Musco and from its president, Joe Crookham, demonstrates the confidence in the direction and the future of the university,” Sours said of the largest gift in the school’s 134-year history. “This gift is emblematic of Joe’s confidence and his commitment, but those feelings are shared by many other people: Trustees, alumni, community people, faculty, staff and students. Lots of people and friends of the university are pleased and supportive.”

Sours said the money would go to cover part of the costs of the nearly 200,000 square feet of new construction projects on campus, which includes space for student recreation, classrooms, laboratories, and a stand-alone Industrial Technology Center building, which will be home for the new Digital Broadcast Studies Program.

“The gift truly is a transformational event for William Penn University, and it affirms the growth and vitality that Penn has been experiencing for the last few years,” Sours said.

Musco Sports Lighting President and CEO Joe Crookham said William Penn University has for 134 years been a mainstay in the community by providing opportunities in higher education. He said the university plays an important role in the sustainable growth and well being of the Mahaska community.

“And we’re very pleased to be able to be in a position to provide a $12 million gift to the university towards its growth,” Crookham said. “As we look to the future, it’s important to plan and build on William Penn’s foundation of excellence. The Musco team is pleased to be partnering with William Penn University in these exciting new expansion projects.”
