Mahaska County Outreach to help Special Olympics team

The Oskaloosa Herald

OSKALOOSA — The Oskaloosa Special Olympics team needs funds for athletic gear and transportation, and Mahaska County Outreach is giving them a hand.

The Mahaska County Outreach Thrift Store is holding a Sack Sale on Friday, March 29, to benefit the local Special Olympics team.

People can go to the thrift store at 114 N. First St. and fill a brown paper shopping bag full of merchandise for $7.

“All proceeds will go to the Osky Special Olympics,” Thrift Store Manager Alice Moore said.

The Oskaloosa Special Olympics team has 41 members, said Tammy Sparks of the Oskaloosa Special Olympics. The Oskaloosa team does various fund-raising events to help cover the costs of competing, she said.

There will be a regional Special Olympics meet at the William Penn University PAC center on April 13, Sparks said. Then, state competition is on May 24.

The Oskaloosa Special Olympics team needs uniforms, equipment, food and transportation to events.

“We are self-funded,” Sparks said. All funds designated to the Oskaloosa Special Olympics will be kept locally, she added.

“My goal is to take all 41 athletes to state and to stay at a hotel,” Sparks said.
