Oskaloosa Class of 2013 graduates

OSKALOOSA — The Oskaloosa High School Class of 2013 began a new chapter in their lives Sunday afternoon as they were the 141st class to graduate from Oskaloosa High School.

“May the future be filled with the realization of your hopes and dreams,” Superintendent Russ Reiter told the class during his commencement welcome.

Reiter told the graduating seniors to meet life’s challenges “head on,” to “find your passion” and to “make a positive difference in the world.”

Seniors Emily Peters and Shanon Boer addressed their classmates and the capacity audience seated in the Oskaloosa High School gym.

Peters said she and her classmates began the count down nine months ago: “How many days to graduation?”

Now, the graduation ceremony was the last time that the Class of 2013 would be in the same room together.

“It’s a weird concept to grasp,” she said.

Peters told her classmates to hold on to their favorite shared memories of high school and their personal favorite memory.

“Hold on to that memory and remember who made it special,” she said.

Boer told her classmates to think about the most important lesson learned in high school. She also told them to think about what kind of person they want to be.

“Your life is going to change,” she said. “That’s a good thing.”

In closing, Boer told her classmates to “enjoy the time we have left together and to look forward to the future.”

The Class of 2013 put an exclamation point on their high school careers by tossing their hats in the air at the end of the commencement ceremony.
