Students, veterans raise the Avenue of Flags

OSKALOOSA — The weather was perfect Saturday morning to raise the Avenue of Flags at Forest Cemetery.

The sun’s rays burned off some early morning mist as about 55 members of the Oskaloosa High School Student Council with advisor Kim Gile helped local veterans raise flags in the cemetery in preparation for the Memorial Day commemoration on May 27.

Fred Bridges of the American Legion said that the students raised about 300 flags that line the lanes in Forest Cemetery that lead to the pond, where the Memorial Day ceremony will be held as well as the veterans memorial in the cemetery.

Bridges and fellow American Legion member Joe S. Crookham gave a brief presentation to students who had never raised a flag before on how to raise the flag.

“We don’t let a flag touch the ground,” Bridges said.

Bridges had the students divide up into teams of three to raise each flag. One group raised flags from the Ninth Street entrance while another group raised flags at the 11th Street entrance.

Gile said Saturday’s flag raising was not the only event Student Council members helped veterans with in preparation for Memorial Day.

“We were out here Wednesday from 4 to 6:30 p.m.,” she said. About 40 Student Council members decorated veterans’ graves with small American Flags, she added.
