State-level legislators from Osky outline goals

DES MOINES — Monday marked the beginning of Iowa’s legislative session.

Republican Iowa House Rep. Guy Vander Linden, of Oskaloosa, said one of his goals for this legislative session is to have state government spend less than it takes in, noting the $600 million surplus. Vander Linden also noted he’d like to see continued tax relief in order to stimulate the economy.

Vander Linden noted that he would like to see commercial property tax relief, as well, which will not shift to residential property tax.

Income tax relief will also be a focus this legislative session, said Vander Linden, noting that he wants to “let Iowans keep more of their own money.”

On Monday, Vander Linden said he was also going to listen closely as Gov. Terry Branstad discussed education Tuesday. He noted that he would like to see more done for education than last year.

When it comes to working with other legislators, Vander Linden noted that there are new members in the Iowa House and that means a “new mix of personalities and a fresh start.” He said he hopes legislators can work together on things.

Republican state Sen. Ken Rozenboom, of Oskaloosa, said one of his first goals in the Iowa Legislature is to establish relationships with senators from both parties. Rozenboom said human relationships are the basis for “all good decision making and policy making.”

Rozenboom said he is interested in advancing property tax reforms to save all tax dollars to all classes of property.

Improving the education system at every opportunity is also one of Rozenboom’s goals, he said Monday.

Rozenboom is a member of the Natural Resources and Environment Committee. He said his goal there is to play a role in the environment. Rozenboom said he would also like to protect Iowa from EPA regulation from the federal level.
