John Sherlock retires from KBOE radio

OSKALOOSA — After working for 22 years at KBOE radio, John Sherlock has retired.

Sherlock moved from Chicago to Oskaloosa in 1986 and since then, he’s been active in the community.

“I started with Sernett Department Store,” he said. “Then, I came to KBOE.”

Sherlock said he worked as “an advertising sales consultant for KBOE from Day 1.” His final day on the job was Monday.

Sherlock said his sales duties took him all over Oskaloosa and Pella.

“I’ve been lucky enough to meet a lot of great people,” he said.

Sherlock not only sold ads for KBOE, he also got some air time on the radio each week.

Sherlock read the “Want ads” on the radio every Monday morning.

“I’m only on for a few minutes. I read the want ad cards,” he said. “I’m not alone” as the DJ is also in the booth, he added.

During his time in Oskaloosa, Sherlock has been active with the Oskaloosa Rotary Club and the Oskaloosa Area Chamber and Development Group.

Sherlock said he has been a Rotarian for “lots of years. I was the Public Relations chairman.”

Besides Rotary, Sherlock has served as a member of the Oskaloosa Chamber board and the Oskaloosa Main Street board.

“I try to be involved in the community as much as I can,” he said. “Now, you can find me on the golf course — Harvest Point.”

Sherlock said he is ready to take it easy and “enjoy some free time and do some traveling.”

“I’m going to learn to be a better golfer,” he joked.

Sherlock and his wife, Ruth, have three sons: Matt, who works at Harvest Point and Edmundson golf courses; David, the oldest who lives in Iowa City; and Ryan, who lives in Van Meter as well as three grandsons.
