Market Street Hall is not just a place for college students to live

OSKALOOSA — The Market Street Hall dormitory on the William Penn University campus has had a lot of use since it opened in January.

The 250-bed, three-story dorm at 1801 N. Market St., was home for students during the Spring 2013 semester.

While it has been open for only a short time, the dorm was home to a variety of visitors to Oskaloosa ranging from arena league football players to high school students attending camps.

The Iowa Barnstormers stayed at the dormitory during their pre-season training camp in March, which coincided with William Penn’s spring break, said William Penn University Residence Life Director Jim Rorabaugh.

After the end of the spring semester, the residence hall has been home to a variety of high-school-aged athletes who participated in camps.

“We have several hundred kids come here,” Rorabaugh said.

Recently, the High Performance Volleyball Camp was held at William Penn University and about 200 high school students stayed at the dorm during the four-day camp.

William Penn also will host a week-long wrestling camp and then a week-long cheerleading camp, Rorabaugh said.

“If done right, it’s a good recruiting tool and this is done right,” Rorabaugh said of the Market Street Hall.

The residence hall will have plenty of use in July.

On July 25, RAGBRAI riders will visit Oskaloosa and many participants will use the facilities at the Market Street Hall dorm. Also, on July 31, the Iowa yearly meeting of the Quakers will be held on campus and participants will stay at the dorm, he said.
