Three receive Governor's Volunteer Award

The Oskaloosa Herald

OSKALOOSA — Beacon resident Mary Richards, along with Oskaloosa residents Lona McGrew and Victoria Laird, as well as Victoria’s dog, Lincoln, received the 2013 Iowa Governor’s Award on June 28 for their selfless contributions to Mahaska Health Partnership.

According to MHP Volunteer Coordinator Kim Langfitt, criteria for selection included exceptional commitment to volunteerism, demonstrated exemplary leadership, creativity, cooperation and work in their service to others. The program provides Iowa nonprofit, charitable and government organizations a way to honor their cherished volunteers with prestigious, state-level recognition.

“Mahaska Health Partnership is incredibly lucky to have volunteers like these,” Langfitt said. “I always know I can count on them to make healthcare personal for everyone they come in contact with at MHP.”

Richards began volunteering at MHP in April 2010 as a way to give back to her community. As an MHP Volunteer, Richards strives to do her best. “Mary is a vital part of our team in Behavioral Health Services,” said Langfitt. “She shows the utmost respect for others and we are blessed to have such a wonderful volunteer.”

McGrew’s volunteer service at MHP began in October 2010 and she is known for her dependability.

“While visiting a friend in the hospital, Lona was asked if she could help out since we were short a volunteer. Lona agreed and even returned to continue helping after she took her friend home,” Langfitt said.

Laird began volunteering at MHP in May 2010. She helped to re-start the Pet Therapy program by bringing Lincoln to weekly visits with patients at Inpatient Services and Inpatient Geriatric Psychiatry.

“Lincoln is an affectionate and loving dog who seems to instinctively know when patients need him,” said Langfitt. “Our patients always want to know when Victoria and Lincoln will be back.”
