Local Lions honor White Cane Week

OSKALOOSA — They want to help people see.

Kim Rozeboom, President of the Oskaloosa Lions Club, said this is the first year that the Oskaloosa Lions Club has held a White Cane Week locally. Lions Clubs hold White Cane Week during the third week of May.

“It’s a fund-raiser for those in the community who can’t, through insurance or whatever purposes, need eyeglasses or eye exams,” explained Rozeboom. “And, also we help with hearing impaired people with hearing aids and that kind of thing.”

White Cane Week is especially important to Rozeboom. As an itinerant vision teacher, she teaches blind and visually-impaired students.

“I had students who needed some things that they needed in the home as opposed to school,” said Rozeboom. “Schools will pay for things that they use at schools. But, if they need things at home, they don’t.”

People can contribute to White Cane Week efforts by making a donation of their choosing. In return, those who donate will get a small, but symbolic white cane in return.

Oskaloosa Lions Club members will be collecting donations for White Cane Week at Hy-Vee and Fareway. Rozeboom said they will be collecting these donations 4 to 7 p.m. Friday evening and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday of this week. She said she hopes to see people donating.

“We’re hopeful because we’re such a small club, but yet we’re getting lots of requests lately since the words got out that we help with eye exams and glasses,” said Rozeboom. “We need some way to be able to help pay for that.”

The Oskaloosa Lions Club will also be holding a golf tournament of sorts in conjunction with the local Kiwanis Club as a fund-raiser next Saturday, said Rozeboom. This will be held beginning 9 a.m. Saturday, May 18, at Harvest Point Golf. Rozeboom explained that this event will be more focused on games involving putting, driving and chipping, rather than a conventional golf tournament.

Rozeboom said there was a Lions Club in Oskaloosa several years ago, noting that its current charter began four years ago. The Oskaloosa Lions Club can be found on Facebook.com by searching, “Oskaloosa Lions Club.”
