Nelson Pioneer Farm artifacts

Do you know what this is?

OSKALOOSA —

A few people knew what this week's featured Nelson Pioneer Farm artifact was — an anemometer.

Jim Sutton, of Eddyville, sent an email: “An anemometer, for measuring wind speed/velocity.” Kayla Scholtus said on Facebook: Anemometer. Pam Howard also posted on Facebook: “looks a lot bigger in this pic than it really is.”

Nelson Pioneer Farm Curator Kelly Halbert did some research on the artifact. She wrote: “Davis Anemometer, 1971

A Biram type anemometer was used to measure the air speed or quantity of air passing through or leaving ducts, flues, fans, shafts, etc., and for numerous tests and survey work in the air conditioning heating, ventilating and industrial fields. This is a hand anemometer with a balanced vane wheel which rotates by responding to the air flow. Through an intermediate clock-like mechanical movement the rotations are indicated on the dials. The cubic feet per minute is calculated by multiplying the lineal feet per minute by the area inside the rim of the anemometer – remember the formula Area = Pi·r²? When this anemometer was used in 1971 that formula was most likely calculated on a slide rule. Now, who remembers a slide rule?”

The Oskaloosa Herald and the Nelson Pioneer Farm are teaming up to test your knowledge of historical artifacts.

The Nelson Pioneer Farm has about 15,000 artifacts in its collection spanning in age from the 1840s to the present.

The Herald will take a picture of an artifact and publish it in the Herald section of the Oskaloosa Shopper, The Oskaloosa Herald an the Herald's Web site, www.oskaloosa.com. People can make a guess on what they think the object could be.

People can either email their guess to oskynews@oskyherald.com or mail their guess to The Oskaloosa Herald, P.O. Box 530, Oskaloosa, IA 52577. You can vote from Wednesday through Saturday.

The identity of the artifact and the vote breakdown will be announced in each Wednesday's Herald Shopper along with the week's new artifact.

Herald Editor Duane Nollen can be reached by email at oskynews@oskyherald.com
