Urban deer hunting tests taken

OSKALOOSA — Now in it’s fourth year, the Urban Deer Hunting season will get underway starting Sept. 14.

Before the start of the season, archery proficiency testing was done this past Thursday and Saturday at the The First Church of the Nazarene “Fellowship Building,” 201 Hope St.

Oskaloosa Police Lt. Russ Van Renterghem explained that about five or six years ago there were numerous complaints about nuisance deer causing problems for gardens and things like that. Van Renterghem noted the number of vehicle vs. deer accidents, as well.

Since starting the urban deer hunting program, complaints about nuisance deer have “really dropped off,” according to Van Renterghem. As far as vehicle vs. deer accidents go, they’ve dropped some, as well.

Jake Van Polen was one of several taking the archery proficiency test for urban deer hunting on Thursday night. Van Polen explained why he wanted to participate in the urban deer hunt this year.

“It’s good practice for the regular season out in the country,” said Van Polen.

Van Polen also hunts for a good cause. He said the he’ll make meat donations through the Help Us Stop Hunger, or HUSH, program.

According the the Iowa Department of Natural Resources’ Web site, HUSH is a program “a cooperative effort among deer hunters, the Food Bank of Iowa, meat lockers and the Iowa DNR.” The main goals of HUSH are reducing the deer population, as well as providing “high-quality red meat to the needy in Iowa.”
