Central jumps in softball rankings

PELLA — Central College jumped five spots to No. 14 in the NFCA Division III softball top 25.

The Dutch, 26-7, won three of four games last week, sweeping a doubleheader with Buena Vista University last Monday, then splitting a pair Sunday at Cedar Rapids against Coe College (28-4), which climbed to No. 10 this week.

Defending league champion Luther College (23-7) took a spill from No. 9 to No. 22 after dropping two games to Simpson College (27-9), but the Norse remain in strong contention for another NCAA Division III tournament berth.

Central faces Luther in a pivotal doubleheader Saturday to close the Iowa Conference regular season. A Luther sweep could drop the Dutch to third place in the league race while a Central sweep would give them at least a share of the conference crown.

Game time is 2 p.m. at the A.N. Kuyper Athletics Complex field. The games will be broadcast on KRLS-FM (92.1) with the voice of the Dutch, Trevor Castle, calling the action.

The broadcast can also be accessed via www.kniakrls.com and live stats will be available through the Central athletics Web site at www.central.edu/athletics.
