People weigh in on decorating for Christmas

OSKALOOSA — When is it OK to put up Christmas lights and/or decorations?

This question has been the subject of differing opinions for many years.

The Oskaloosa Herald asked this question via Facebook and received several opinions on the matter from readers. Many different perspectives on the practice of putting up Christmas decorations and when is best to do it were offered.

Kristen Marie Feenay wrote, “i think its okay to put up christmas lights after halloween before it gets to cold cuz who wants to put christmas lights / decor up in snow ? prolly no one”

Kayla Scholtus answered by saying, “After Thanksgiving!”

Renee Visser offered another perspective. She wrote, “Put up the lights before snow. But, don’t turn them on before Thanksgiving. One holiday at a time, please.”

Shanna Bruns thought it would be OK to put up Christmas lights on Thanksgiving, while spending time with family. She wrote, “This way other family that may not be here for Christmas can help. That was oue tradition when we went out of state for Thanksgiving & not Christmas.”

Bob Deffenbaugh thought weather should be considered when putting up Christmas lights/decorations. He wrote, “You can put up outdoor decorations when the weather is good but not to light them until Thanksgiving.”

Linda S Wonderlich Dougan thought the decision on when it’s OK to put up Christmas lights should be up to the individual. She wrote, “January? They’re your lights-do it whenever you want!”

Tonda Bolinger echoed Wonderlich Dougan’s sentiment. She wrote, “Whenever you want they are your lights” in response to the question.

Ashley Probst seemed to be a proponent of putting up lights and having them on right after Halloween. She wrote, “Mine are up and have been turned outside ones on Nov 1st. Lol I looooooove Christmas. Makes the house so pretty at night.”
