Relay for Life team holds garage sale fund-raiser Saturday

OSKALOOSA —

Local cancer survivors organized a garage sale Saturday at the Southern Iowa Fairgrounds to raise money for a Relay for Life walking team.

Diana Buffington and Virginia Pierson are cancer survivors and teammates on the Interpower Corp. Relay for Life walking team. The team has 15 members — which also includes three survivors, Buffington said. Buffington is a 15-year breast cancer survivor while Pierson is an almost-three-year breast cancer survivor.

Buffington said the garage sale was the first fund-raiser the team has held to raise money for Relay for Life. The garage sale was held in the DAV Building at the Southern Iowa Fairgrounds and it lasted from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Buffington said the team's goal is to raise $1,500 for Relay for Life, since there are 15 members on the Interpower team.

“We'll go above and beyond,” Buffington said. “We have a good team.”

There were several items on display for sale — clothing, a gas clothes dryer, wood-spool tables built for chalk art and homemade cushion seats, as well as jewelry.

Monica Woodard made the tables that featured slate-painted surfaces for chalk art, Buffington said. Buffington made the cushioned chairs that were on display with the tables.

“It didnt' take me long to do at all,” Buffington said.

Buffington said all the items on sale were donated to the cause.

“There's a lot of nice people” out there, she said.

Lavine Bosveld manned the cashier table with Buffington.

“We've got jewelry here,” she said. “The jewelry was made by a lady in the Shipping Department.”

Many people came Saturday morning to get some great deals and support Relay for Life.

“We've had quite a few come in,” Buffington said. “We're having a really good turnout. Some arrived at 7:30 a.m.”
