Freaky 5K focused on fun

OSKALOOSA — The second-annual Mahaska County YMCA Freaky 5K and Kids’ Fun Run was held Saturday morning, with runners leaving the starting line at the stadium at Lacey Recreation Complex.

The event served as a fundraiser for the Mahaska County YMCA.

What makes this 5K a little different from others is the fact that participants were encouraged to dress like one would to go trick or treating. Ryan Harkema, sports fitness and aquatics director for the Mahaska County YMCA, said the costumes were an important part of the event.

“I think the key when we first decided to do this last year was we wanted to not just do another event,” he said, adding that they wanted to do something for Mahaska County YMCA members, as well as the community, that was fun and competitive at the same time.

The 5K was run mostly on the Recreation Trail.

At 8 a.m., the Fun Run portion of the event found a handful of children running around the stadium track. This was followed by the 9 a.m. 5K. Harkema said it’s good to include younger children in the event this way.

“We’re all about the kids and having fun,” said Harkema, noting that some children in the Kids’ Fun Run could also be interested in the 5K when they get older.

This year marked the second time the event had been held. Harkema said the 2012 Freaky 5K was a success.

“Last year was a great year,” he said, noting that there were about 65 runners in the 5K, as well as around seven fun run participants.

Although registration was continuing Saturday morning, at one point Harkema noted that 85 people had already registered for the 5K before it got started this year.
