More than 200 attend MHP's Breast Health Night

OSKALOOSA — More than 200 people attended Mahaska Health Partnership’s “Women’s Breast Health Night” on Tuesday, Oct. 22.

The evening featured one of MHP’s newest Family Practice Physicians, Bridget Shariat, DO, as the keynote speaker.

Dr. Shariat is an expert in female health and all aspects of primary care. She talked about the importance of women knowing their bodies and family history of cancer and taking care of themselves by being proactive regarding their health.

“If we don’t take care of ourselves, we may not be there to take care of our loved ones,” Dr. Shariat stressed.

Along with Dr. Shariat, Gala Harrison, President of the Southeast Iowa Affiliate of Susan G. Komen and a breast cancer survivor, shared her story. She offered a humorous take on her personal journey with breast cancer.

According to MHP Director of Radiology Julie Hartke, special thanks must also go to MHP providers who came to staff booths and talk to participants. These include General Surgeons Dr. Tim Breon and Dr. Paul Riggs; OB/GYN Specialist Dr. Jeffrey Fowler; Family Practice Physicians Dr. Bridget Shariat, Dr. Tara Hoftiezer; and Family Nurse Practitioner Tina Main, ARNP-C.

A variety of services from MHP had booths at the event, including the Cancer Care and Infusion Center, Radiology, General Surgery, Behavioral Health Services, Lymphedema, Massage Therapy, Primary Care Services, Diabetes Education and Medical Nutrition Therapy.

As Dr. Shariat stressed, aside from genetic risks associated with breast cancer, there are many lifestyle factors that also play a role. The information booths strived to educate participants about ways to reduce their risk through diet, exercise, stress management and regular checkups.

Booths from throughout the region included Southeast Iowa Affiliate of Susan G. Komen, Hammer Medical Supply, Care for Yourself and Crisis Intervention.

The Free Women’s Breast Health Night is funded, in part, by the Southeast Iowa Affiliate of Susan G. Komen. The organization has awarded MHP with a grant to provide free digital mammograms to women who are uninsured, underinsured or those with a financial need.
