Students vow to not text while driving

OSKALOOSA — Everyone should know about the dangers of texting while driving — especially young, inexperienced drivers.

On Thursday morning, Oskaloosa Mayor Dave Krutzfeldt signed a No Text on Board Pledge Day proclamation at Oskaloosa High School denoting Sept. 19 as a day to not text while driving.

Oskaloosa High School Principal Stacy Bandy was on hand for the signing of the proclamation.

Bandy noted that the No Text on Board is a program by AT&T that advocates for not texting while driving. He said the high school student council helped the program come to the school Thursday.

Students signed a banner to be displayed at the high school saying that they won’t text and drive, noted Bandy.

Students also had the opportunity to use a driving simulator Thursday morning. Students would then attempt to send and receive text messages with their phones while using the simulator. Bandy noted that students attempting to use the driving simulator while texting “crashed.”

Bandy is aware of the fact that texting while driving can prove fatal for young people.

“It’s a sad thing,” said Bandy.

Oskaloosa Police Lt. Craig Alexander, who also serves as the school district’s resource officer, also pointed to the importance of not texting while driving.

“If you divide your attention, you’re just looking for accidents,” said Alexander.

Krutzfeldt discussed his experience with seeing people who appear to be texting while driving.

“There’s clearly something else on their mind and it’s more often than not some sort of a text message they’re working with,” said Krutzfeldt.

Krutzfelt said the first step to dealing with the issue of texting while driving is to draw attention to it. Hence, Thursday’s proclamation signing.
