Patient Care Wing set to open at MHP

OSKALOOSA — Mahaska Health Partnership's new addition will soon serve patients.

On Tuesday morning, the Herald was able to tour MHP's new Patient Care Wing.

Surgical Services can be found on the lower level of the Patient Care Wing, while the upper level is home to the Birthing Center and Inpatient Services.

Cathy Stahl, MHP Marketing and Development director, said the most exciting part of the inpatient services area of the new wing are the patient rooms.

“We're very excited that each of these rooms is equipped with restrooms and a lot of other special features,” said Stahl, adding that the increased size of the new rooms allows for more visitors.

Money from the USDA is helping fund the new wing. Stahl said the support of the community and business leaders played a role in the hospital getting USDA funding for the project.

“This was built for our patients' comfort and convenience,” said Stahl, adding that safety and privacy features are also a big part of the new wing.

Stahl said the hospital has always had an excellent staff. She said now they have a facility that's at the same high level as their employees.

“We're excited to be able to offer that to our community,” said Stahl.

Chyann Vroegh, director of the birthing center in the new Patient Care Wing, noted the state-of-the art lighting to be used during deliveries, whirl pool tubs, larger patient rooms and refrigerators in each room as some of the features patients will be able to utilize.

There's also a step outside of the nursery window that will allow siblings to get a good view in the new birthing center of the wing, noted Vroegh. A play area for siblings of newborns is also part of the new birthing center.

Stahl also noted the good patient and staff flow that was in mind when designing the birthing center.

An open house for the Patient Care Wing will be held this Sunday from noon to 3 p.m.

The new Patient Care Wing at MHP will begin taking patients Sept. 17, Stahl said.
