No two the same in golf ball collection

OSKALOOSA — Paul Floden has a few golf balls.

According to Floden, he has 11,700 in his collection, which has been growing for more than 30 years.

The golf balls come from a wide variety of manufacturers and include numerous different colors and designs. Today, the golf balls line the walls of Floden’s garage, with some actually situated in the rafters.

So, why does Floden collect golf balls?

“It just kind of got in my blood, I guess,” said Floden. “I just kept finding them and people kept bringing them to me. So, it just grew into more than I thought it would.”

Many of the golf balls in Floden’s collection come from golfing friends of his. There are golf balls he has that come from Ireland, England and Canada, as well.

“They’re from all over,” said Floden, later noting that there’s no two golf balls alike in his collection.

Floden’s collection is well-organized on a series of golf ball racks he produced himself.

“They’re all in alphabetical order except the ones that don’t have a name,” explained Floden, noting that some of the golf balls are up on his racks according to what image they have on them, rather than a particular brand name.

Keeping them in alphabetical order means a bit of rearranging each time he adds to the collection, Floden said.

“I have to do a lot of moving,” said Floden.

The process of creating the series of racks to hold the golf balls took some degree of carpentry on Floden’s part. He explained the process of creating the racks, which includes putting a ¾ inch hole every 1 7/8 inches along the racks.

Floden said he’s not done collecting.

“I’ve probably still got room for another 1,000 or so,” he said.
