Community responds to 'Georgiana' audition

OSKALOOSA — Auditions were held over three nights this past week at George Daily Auditorium for the upcoming performance of “Georgiana,” and cast members will soon be announced.

The story is an original piece with the script, music and lyrics written by Iola (Powell) Cadwallader, of Oskaloosa.

This is the second time this musical has been performed in Oskaloosa; and the first time it will be performed at George Daily Community Auditorium. Oskaloosa Community Theater members performed the locally written musical in 1980 at the Oskaloosa Junior High School.

“Georgiana” is the story of Jim and Georgiana Powell and the struggles they had as a family moving from Ohio to Kansas and their day-to-day existence on a new farm.

In 1980, then-Herald staff writer Alan Campbell wrote: “‘Georgiana’ is more than the story of one couple. It’s the story of life during the Great Depression, the birth, growing and departure of nine children and how society’s realization that the ‘War to end all wars’ was not.”

All but forgotten simpler times will come to life on the stage under the direction of Randall Wright and assistant director Andy McGuire. Wright directed the original performance in 1980 and is excited to direct this performance in honor of Iola’s 90th birthday this year.

Wright said he is pleased with the number of families that came out to audition as a unit.

“It is really neat to see parents doing an activity like this with their kids,” he said.

Several families had multi-generational members audition for the performance.

“The community has responded to the audition all the way from 4-year-olds to adults,” Wright said.

The main characters are Cadwallader’s mother and father, Georgiana and Jim, and her two brothers and six sisters, but there are many, many roles for supporting parts as well.

The story opens in 1918 and continues through 1957 and will be challenging for the set crews to find historical items for the many set changes. Wright encourages any community member that has a passion for antiques or a skill in an isolated area to step into the special role of set design.

“It would be extremely valuable to have expertise in this area,” Wright said.
