William Penn graduates commencement Saturday

OSKALOOSA — Saturday, about 344 members of the William Penn University Class of 2014 said farewell to their college days and began their journey into the working world.

William Penn University held Commencement in the Penn Activities Center. A variety of degrees ranging from associates degrees to masters were awarded to the graduates.

William Penn alumnus William “Bill” Kimball, a 1970 Penn graduate, delivered some words of wisdom to the graduates as the keynote speaker.

“You’ve paid a big price for your education, but it’s worth it,” Kimball said.

Kimball told the graduates that with their degree from William Penn, they could “compete with any other graduate from any other school.”

Kimball said that William Penn is the perfect place to foster the body and the mind. Also, with a degree, students have an idea of what they want to do with their lives.

Kimball said he received a degree in economics, but eventually worked in the world of pharmacy. Kimball was chairman and CEO of Medicap Pharmacies Inc. for more than 30 years.

“Success comes from hard work,” he said. However, a successful life is not all about working to perform a job. Kimball advised the graduates to volunteer to help make the world a better place, and attend workshops and seminars to improve themselves.

Kimball advised the graduates that “positive people move forward and negative people are contagious.” He said not to play the “blame game” if things go wrong at work and to remember if you point a finger at someone, there are three fingers pointing back at you.

In closing, Kimball said for the graduates to not make life harder than it needs to be, work hard, and be nice and have fun.
