Creating art made of metal at the Southern Iowa Fair

OSKALOOSA — Some artistic 4-H and FFA members took a bucket of scrap metal and created some art in the inaugural Bucket O Junk contest at the Southern Iowa Fair.

Eight young artists — ages 10 to 17 — teamed up with an adult mentor to weld pieces of scrap metal into works of art ranging from windmills to locomotives.

The blue-ribbon winners of the contest had their works of art up for auction Thursday evening at the Southern Iowa Fair Pavilion. The proceeds of the auction will benefit 4-H and FFA members premiums for the 2014 fair.

Two of the artists who had their works up for auction talked about their first experience working with metal.

Katelyn Vos, 10, created a locomotive sculpture with her grandfather, Henry Vernooy.

Katelyn said they worked for three to four hours every Wednesday night for four weeks to create the old-fashioned locomotive metal sculpture.

She said the best part of the project was working with her grandfather and learning how to weld.

“He's got a lot of scrap stuff,” Katelyn said.

Katelyn said she had a lot of fun working on her project and would like to do some more welding in the future.

Zachery Edgren, 11, said he created a windmill and a combine with his scrap metal.

Zachery said he worked with his father, Dan Edgren, for about two months to weld his project.

The project was a lot of fun, Zachery said.

“I got to learn how to weld, use a plasma cutter,” he said.

Zachery said he also wants to use his newly learned skill for future welding projects.
