Severe Weather Awareness Week this week

DES MOINES — The week of March 25 to 29 has been declared Severe Weather Awareness Week by the Iowa Homeland Security and Emergency Management Division and the National Weather Service, according to the NWS Web site.

Severe Weather Awareness Week is put in place to remind people that severe weather is part of living in Iowa and “that understanding the risks and how to respond to them can save lives,” according to the NWS Web site.

There are a few new things to know about for 2013. This year, there are “impact based warnings,” which intend to better communicate severe weather threats with warnings from the NWS.

This year will also be the first complete severe weather season to have Wireless Emergency Alerts, according to the NWS Web site. The NWS Des Moines Web site will also feature “new and improved severe weather preparedness pages.”

The NWS has also recently added a Youtube.com page, which features multi-media Web briefings for upcoming hazardous weathers as well as preparedness videos.

A tornado drill is scheduled for Wednesday at 10 a.m.
