UNIVERSITY PARK —

Sandra Voss is retiring from Kids Corner Child Care today after 19 years.

Voss started at Kids Corner in the child care program in 1994. She has been director of the facility for the past 3 ½ years.

Voss was a stay-at-home mom who gradually worked her way into child care. She babysat children until her own children began school. Then, she volunteered at Jack & Jill Preschool and at Webster School. While at Webster, Voss met kindergarten teacher Mrs. Grafke, who encouraged her to work with children.

“She was an inspiration to me,” Voss said.

Voss said her first job was at the YMCA preschool, where she spent 10 years. Then, she joined the Kids Corner staff.

Voss manages a staff of 12 at Kids Corner and the facility is licensed for up to 93 children. The children range in age from infants to 3 years old.

What's the best part of her job?

“Watching the children from infancy on up grow,” she said.

Voss said the main challenge of her job is “keeping up with the times” and all of the changes that have taken place.

“A lot have been good, positive changes for the kids,” she added.

The Kids Corner staff teaches a “creative curriculum” to the children to prepare them for kindergarten.

“We do more with children than just babysit,” she said.

Voss has a simple plan for her retirement.

“I'm going to watch my grandson and look after my mother,” she said.

Voss said the Kids Corner staff is throwing a retirement party for her this evening at the Peppertree.
