Sweet corn savored in Osky

OSKALOOSA — It’s that old familiar smell — roasting sweet corn on the Oskaloosa square.

On Thursday, the annual Sweet Corn Serenade was held in downtown Oskaloosa. The event is now in its 26th year, according to Oskaloosa Area Chamber and Development Group Events Coordinator Karen Hafner.

With 32 craft and food venders open for business on the square at noon on Thursday, Sweet Corn Serenade continued at 4 p.m. with sweet corn and burgers being served starting at 4 p.m. By 5:30 p.m., the music of singer Kassie could be heard on the square.

“She performed at our tree-lighting ceremony and she was so popular we asked her to come back for Sweet Corn,” said Hafner.

The evening was topped of by a performance from the Oskaloosa City Band, which started at 8 p.m. This was the city band’s second to last performance of the summer season. It also included children’s activities, a pedal pull and pie baking contest

It takes a lot of corn for Sweet Corn Serenade to be a success. Hafner said 210 dozen ears of corn were to be prepared for this year’s Sweet Corn Serenade. Although this may seem like a lot of corn for a single event, Hafner noted that this is a pretty standard amount to have for Sweet Corn Serenade.

The cooking of the corn started at around 3 p.m. in order to be ready for folks to munch on by 4 p.m.
