Stuff the Bus returns to help students

OSKALOOSA — On Wednesday, United Way of Mahaska County displayed a school bus stuffed with school supplies in a parking lot on South D Street. These supplies will be made available to preschool through 12th grade students countywide this coming school year.

Amy Langdon, director of United Way of Mahaska County, said this year’s Stuff the Bus efforts have been a success, much like they were in 2012. She added that the supplies helped around 500 area students last year.

“Last year the bus was about full, which is amazing,” she said. “We’re going to make it even more full this year.”

Langdon said every school supply one could imagine was used to stuff the bus this year. She noted that items like flash drives, headphones and other supplies were on the bus Wednesday morning.

There certainly is a need for these supplies in Mahaska County.

“It can be tough for parents,” said Langdon.

Many of the items stuffing the bus were donated by individuals at area businesses. Langdon noted that 47 donation boxes could be found around town.

“It’s a huge undertaking,” Langdon said.
